Dragon Rocks is a bluff on a rhyolite dome in the Sutter Buttes. The bluff is about 700 feet across and about 275 feet tall.
Even from Pass Road's closest point of 1.1 miles Dragon Rocks is not very noticeable and few people traveling down Pass Road would notice it.
Dragon Rocks is a big facade of stacked rocks. Some areas that of clearly stacked rocks are: The first rock stack is in the lower left of the formation.
The God Head is a circular cairn of fitted stones about 50 feet tall in the top center of Dragon Rocks. The God Head seems impossibly balanced on a ledge. The God Head produces many head and face images and is a giant head for bodies in the bluff below it.
Horse Head at times looks like a horse head, hence the clever nickname.
The Sphinx Screen is a section of Dragon Rocks that among other things produces various images of a sphinx. It is a section of rock from which the rock was removed leaving a large flat surface with right angle edges.
On the Heads and the Horse head a story plays out between a shadow beast and a sphinx. For about 2 to 3 weeks on either side of the winter solstice The story morphs between the winter solstice and the summer solstice and back again. Depending on the time of year the show is from about 3 to 5 hours long.
This is the winter solstice version of the story and by the end of the story the shape shifting shadow beast has swallowed everything.
